Laura Gillingham is nineteen years old. She grew up in Rivers MB, Canada. In Rivers there is not a whole lot to do, so what did she do with her spare time? She played sports, a lot of them! She thinks that sports is a huge part of her life and has made her who she is today.
Laura's mom, Rachel was a gymnastics coach, so Laura and her sister Alexis played gymnastics for a couple of years. She can't remember how long she played for, but it wasn't very long. Laura really did appreciate that even though her mom loved the sport and wanted to see her kids compete in it, she never pressured them into playing in something that they didn't love as much as her. In grade one Laura started to play soccer. Her dad was her coach from under eight soccer until under sixteen soccer. She thinks that her dad being her coach for that period of time was both a good and bad thing. More good than bad for sure though. The only bad thing was that they often got into fights because he was very hard on her. At the same time though, that was also a good thing for Laura and really helped shape her as a person. She thinks that because if her dad had not been hard on her she would not be able to take people getting upset at her she wouldn't have been able to handle the coaches that she has had since her dad who are are and were very hard on her. She thinks that if she never had her dad as a coach she wouldn't have been able to play the sports she has continued to play throughout her high school and college career.
Laura thinks that sports have also helped her learn how to balance things in her life and has taught her many lessons besides learning solely the game itself. She has learnt from the sports she has played the importance of teamwork, hard work, satisfaction, appreciation, heart, and wanting something so badly and doing everything that she knows possible in order to achieve her goals!
