Tonight I am going to be talking about how different people find the motivation to do things in sport. Throughout the past two months I have played both soccer and volleyball here at Providence. Soccer started first and our coach was pretty hard on us. To motivate us he would yell at us and be very upfront to us which I think worked the best for me. He would tell us if we weren't playing good, and he would tell us if we were. A lot of the girls that I was playing with did not like his approach to coaching. They thought that he was to hard on them and that it was no way to talk to people. This caused some tension between our team dynamics which was hard, but we had a talk and it for the most part got resolved.
Since the soccer season is now over, I have been playing on the volleyball team. My volleyball coach is very different from my soccer coach. My volleyball coach is not as verbal as my soccer coach was. He is more particular with the words that he uses when he wants us to do better. I think for the dynamics of the volleyball team and how they think, this is a better approach. I wouldn't mind it if he was more verbal and told us when we needed to pick it up; but that's ok.
I am interested in seeing what one is more affective overall and which one is preferred. They both work for different people. I think that you can tell a lot from a person to how they can be coached. Most girls who like the 'hard-ass' coaching for lack of a better word and tougher as a person and I think who can handle the pressures a lot more compared to someone who is more sensitive to what coaches tell them. I have always been told and always believe that if a coach is not giving you feedback and not yelling at you or telling you what to do you should be more worried than if he is not saying anything to you at all. If he/she has stopped talking or worrying about you, then he has given up on you and that is a much scarier thing than a coach yelling at you and pushing you because he knows that you can do better!
And with that, I am concluding my blog posts!! Not that I won't write again, but it will not be as frequent as it has been for the past three months! Talk to you all later.

Yesterday in Western Civilization an interesting point was brought up. A Zambian woman wrote a book, and I cannot remember what the book was titled; but in this book she wrote about how if we would stop sending money/food/products to countries such as Africa and other third world places then there government would have to step up and become stronger so that they can do what is best for there country and provide the proper things that we as Canadians have in our every day life that other countries fight for everyday. I think that that is a very interesting point. I don't know if I agree on it completely, but I feel like if other countries did not rely on countries like us to provide things for them that they cannot would there country be stronger? Or would the government still not pay any attention to those they rule over. Personally I don't think that the government would do a whole lot if all of a sudden first world countries stopped helping the third world ones. I think that there government got them there to begin with and I think that those places have corrupt enough government that there wouldn't be a whole lot of change for those who do need the help that Canadians give to them. It was an interesting topic though, and I think that the more I think about it the more it makes me think. I wouldn't mind reading this book just because it is from a lady who is from one of theses struggling countries and it would be interesting to see her point of view on the topic and to see what she thinks. I have never been to Africa so I have never witnessed first hand the circumstances to which they live in, but I can only imagine how terrible it would be and if they didn't receive any help from anyone else then I don't know how they would survive.

We are now a month away from Christmas and for many that means, black Friday. Something that I was not overly familiar about but apparently every other person in America is. Black Friday is a day of the year a month before christmas and most of the stores in America (and now Canada) have crazy sales on all of there merchandise. Sales prices range from 10-90% off there store items and people go absolutely crazy! Watching the news tonight for about five minutes I was able to see just a bit of the madness that happens on this day. People take days off school and work and line up in front of there favourite stores a day before it opens. This year it seems to be out of control. There was a lady who brought pepper spray and sprayed her way through the crowds of people to get the items she wanted. There are people in the hospital in critical condition because they have been shot by others because of what they purchased.
I do not understand this at all. This is supposed to be a fun day for people to get a good discount off of whatever they wanted to to start there holiday shopping. Not a day that results in people sending other people to the hospital. Some police officers say that they were expecting worse that it was too.
I think that this is sad. Out of all the things that are wrong with our world and all of the reasons worth fighting for; this surly isn't one of them. People need to take a look at this and realize that there are things that might be worth fighting over, but a shopping day is not one of them. Absolutely ridiculous.

Today was WE day in Winnipeg. I have not heard of it until today and from the sounds of it and the commercials and advertisements I have watched it sounds pretty amazing. I love hearing stories like these. When people do things that are pure and for the a greater cause. It really is very inspirational.
For those of you who do not know what WE day is, it is a day where people go and listen to speakers talk for the day about how they can make a difference. They get celebrities to go and talk as well and I think that is so great of them to do that. It is nice to see that people who are as powerful as celebrities can be and have them use there stardom for the better! I think that more people should be involved in trying to make our world a better place. Once you hear people talk about how simple it can be; it really makes no sense to why people shouldn't take better care of our Earth. I think that we are so fortunate and that we take for granted a lot of things that we have. Things that are simple and we don't even think about. It is sad really. I am as guilty as anyone too when it comes to this. I am going to try and get better at putting things in perspective and being more grateful for the things that we so often take for granted! I am also going to try and make a difference. Everyone can, and I think of the people who have made a difference in my life and how I wouldn't be there if it wasn't for them, I think that I should give that back somehow. I think that everyone should! This Earth would be a lot better place ! :)

SUCKS TO B.U.
I live in Rivers MB. Rivers is only about half hour away from Brandon MB. Brandon is home to Brandon University, and as we all know; Brandon University has now been on strike for the past 41 days. So over a month now. This weekend when I visited home I was able to talk to a couple of my really good friends who are going to BU and there thoughts on everything that has happened with there school. I was actually surprised to see how frustrated my one friend is just because all throughout high school is was about the most un-studious person I knew! So it came to shock when he vented about how mad he was about the strike.
I think that it is complete B.S. what the students are going through right now. What's worse is that the profs have said that they are not refunding the students there lost tuition for missing the school that they have. I just do not understand the nerve that they have. At first (I don't know if this has changed on not) they were asking for a 37% increase in there pay! How do they expect to get that?! I know for a fact that after this year if they are wanting to get an increase in pay there tuition costs are going to have to get a lot higher because there is most definitely not going to be the same amount of people who attended BU this year as they have been in the past.
This is also ridiculous because they are saying that if they go back to school they will be making up for lost time during either the Christmas or summer holidays. I'm sorry.... but if they expect to get paid more money they how the hell can the students afford to pay for that if the time that they have to work in the summer and Christmas break to pay for there school is cut short.
One last note to how crazy/ridiculous/frustrating this whole thing is is that how are exchange students and the students that do not live here are being torn into not being able to go home because they have no idea to when they will even return to school. So in the mean time they cannot go home for right now, or even make plans to go home for there own Christmas because they don't know if they will have to stay at school and make up for the time that the selfish, self centred, self absorbed professors have missed.

And he's back ladies and gentleman!
After not appearing in any NHL game for 320 day Sidney Crosby is back! While the game is still going Sidney Crosby came in with a bang! His third shift back on the ice Crosby makes his way through three New York Islander players and banks it top shelf. Since then he has added two more assists to help his team out. As of right now they are beating the Islanders 3-0 mid second period.
With all the hype that Sid the kid has had on and off the ice it is nice to see him return and have such a strong impact on the team. Sidney Crosby left the hockey world for a while there because of head injuries that he had suffered last season during a game against the Tampa Bay Lightings. Since then he has had a lot of talk going on around him to whether he would return to the rink and play even. I do not think that he suffered major head injuries, I understand that every head injury should be a serious matter, but I think that it was a pretty big extreme with Sidney Crosby. I do understand though the need to keep the Penguins captain in good health though. So far this game he has taken a couple hits and has done fine with them, but I do not expect teams will go lightly on him since returning. It will be interesting to see what happens with his career in the next couple of weeks!
Wishing him the best of luck!

Laura Gillingham is nineteen years old. She grew up in Rivers MB, Canada. In Rivers there is not a whole lot to do, so what did she do with her spare time? She played sports, a lot of them! She thinks that sports is a huge part of her life and has made her who she is today.
Laura's mom, Rachel was a gymnastics coach, so Laura and her sister Alexis played gymnastics for a couple of years. She can't remember how long she played for, but it wasn't very long. Laura really did appreciate that even though her mom loved the sport and wanted to see her kids compete in it, she never pressured them into playing in something that they didn't love as much as her. In grade one Laura started to play soccer. Her dad was her coach from under eight soccer until under sixteen soccer. She thinks that her dad being her coach for that period of time was both a good and bad thing. More good than bad for sure though. The only bad thing was that they often got into fights because he was very hard on her. At the same time though, that was also a good thing for Laura and really helped shape her as a person. She thinks that because if her dad had not been hard on her she would not be able to take people getting upset at her she wouldn't have been able to handle the coaches that she has had since her dad who are are and were very hard on her. She thinks that if she never had her dad as a coach she wouldn't have been able to play the sports she has continued to play throughout her high school and college career.
Laura thinks that sports have also helped her learn how to balance things in her life and has taught her many lessons besides learning solely the game itself. She has learnt from the sports she has played the importance of teamwork, hard work, satisfaction, appreciation, heart, and wanting something so badly and doing everything that she knows possible in order to achieve her goals!

It's been awhile!
I just got back early this morning from Orlando, FL. Wow. What an amazing time! I left with my volleyball team for NCCAA nationals on the 8th of November. Unfortunately we did not do as good as planned. We lacked the intensity and drive to compete which was really to bad. Despite that though, we had an amazing time! When we were not playing volleyball we were able to do some shopping (which I was not a huge fan of, but that's alright), some of us went to a carnival; while we were there a couple of the girls on the team decided that they were brave enough to venture 300ft in the air and drop down! What a thing to see! I cannot believe that they actually could do it, but I am thinking that it must have been an amazing feeling! We also went to Universal Studios, which was amazing! I was there in April, so not that long ago, but there was so many things to see there that I missed before! My favorite part of the the park is the Harry Potter attractions. When we were there the cast from Harry Potter was as well, so it was a little crazy to see some of the people dressed up as Hogwarts students! The rides were so cool though. For anyone who loves the thrill of rides, would most defiantly love this part of the park. The reason that the ride is so amazing is because it is not only a roller coaster, but also a visual ride. So as you are turning around and moving up and down a little on the ride you are also experiencing being with Harry on his broom as he rode through and around his school. Pretty amazing for anyone, even if you aren't a huge Harry Potter fan! We were also able to go to CoCoa beach. It was so much fun! Truly the perfect way to end our stay in Florida.
As fun as it was being there, I was happy to come back to Canada and hear my family and friends voices again!

Freshman 15?
A report was shown to us today that the dreaded "freshman 15" is nothing more than a myth. In the article is says that woman only gain about seven pounds throughout there college life, and men gain around thirteen pounds. The report went on to say that girls in there freshman year actually lost weight. Why I wonder? Stress maybe? I found this information very shocking just because in high school we were made to go to a lot of nutrition lectures on eating the right food post high school education. They made us go to a lot of nutrition talks; which makes me wonder if it was just a waste of time, or did all the information we learnt then actually transfer and helped us now?
I am sure that for some people this is not the case and they do gain some more weight than they carried around with them the year before, but for me I found that as a student who lives in dorm and is on the meal-plan that I am often more cautious about what I am consuming. Personally for me, I think it is partially because I am an athlete and therefore have to make sure I am eating properly before I go to a practice or game, or just because I am given so many options to eat that I see the things that are usually not good for you and since it is so easy just to pick a healthier choice because it is already made for you makes it easier.
I don't know though if this information was in fact a good things to release! I think that we still need to be very conscious of what we are consuming!

Recently in the papers there has been a story going around about the Neepawa Natives hockey team. It has made the front page of the Winnipeg Free Press and other news outlets in Manitoba.
As a part of an initiation the rookies were to preform certain tasks in front of the veterans to officially be a part of these teams. Initiation's are normal for teams to do at the start of every year to there rookies, but the Native's took it way over the edge this year. The rookies were made to do some pretty awful things to themselves and were caught, and are now having to suffer some very severe consequences because of it.
Now I know that this kind of stuff happens all the time throughout the world. I know I have taken part in some sort of initiation for joining sports teams in my years; of course none were to the extent of this stories, but even still; we have all been there.
This story has more to it than is initially presented I think. I know when you first read the article you are disgusted with the players and coaches who were supposed to be there as someone for you to look up to and to guide you as leaders. That is what I first thought, and then as I thought about it more I became more aware at how drastically this man's life will be now that this story is out. He is going to be scarred for a very long time and this is something he is going to have to live with for the rest of your life. That injury is going to be more painful and last longer than the physical damage done if you ask me. What was also very sad about the story was that when this man went public about this, the team did not automatically apologize but criticized him for coming clean about what had happened.
In closing I am so disappointed in these young men. The scars that will be left with the rookies that had to participate in these acts of hazing and bullying will last a long time. I hope that this is a lesson for any other teams out there as well that do any kind of cruel behaviour to there teammates.
When I think of a team, this story is not the first thing that comes to my mind, I just hope now for others that it won't be as well because if it has, than it might have ruined some peoples idea of a team and what a team is supposed to do and what they are really supposed to be for each other.

"Somewhere behind the athlete you've become and the hours of practice and the coaches who have pushed you is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back... play for her."
- Mia Hamm
Tomorrow is our first regional play off game for soccer. You have no idea how nervous I am. I came into playing soccer this year with not much thought. I had never taken the sport that seriously and I was coming here to play volleyball as well, a sport that I liked more anyways. I cannot believe how much my attitude has changed in the past 2 months though. I love playing soccer. I really think that it helps that I am surrounded by people who love the sport and who are so passionate about playing the sport that you feed off of that energy. Tomorrow we play Faith, we have beat them before, but stats do not mean anything. I am going into the game with the mindset to play the game I have fallen in love with and not forgetting the reasons that I have. I want to make my family, teammates and myself proud this weekend. I want to go out onto the field and leave it all on there. I am going to play hard for 1800 minutes of soccer. I know that I can do it, and I hope that you are coming to watch.
It is hard knowing that in two days soccer for this season is going to be over. I don't want that, so I am going to remember why I love the game, think of all the time and effort I have put into it, remember the time that others put into it as well, and hopefully leave the fields knowing that all of the hard work and passion that I have and have put into the game is not wasted. Being nervous is good. It shows that you care!
So tomorrow and Saturday at one o'clock, come and support your teammates! Go Prov!!

What is enough?
A movie star now a days is not someone who acts in a film directed by a film director like it used to be. No, today a movie star is not just someone who can act because really that is not good anymore. When we used to think of a movie star who has the whole package, we saw talent, looks and skill to do with the career that he or she has chosen. But now, to have the whole package a movie star must also have a major record, a perfume fragrance, a clothing line which includes accessories, a cooking book, and a famous husband with famous kids on the rise, whether they are biological or adopted... Usually it is the adopted ones that make the headlines, so they might go for that to boost there status.
I'm sorry, but it is getting ridiculous. The sad thing about it all is that the celebrity who starts off as a actor/actress is usually not that good to begin with, so instead of working to get better at the job that they started they instead decide to sing, design, adopt and whatever else they can do to make money for themselves. Why?! I do not understand why they are so obsessed with themselves and feel the urge to always having to be on top of everyone else.
Really, if you can't do the first thing that you attempted to do great, do not try to be a better at something else only to make you money. It's sick.

So as I'm sure everyone has heard now; Muammar Gadhafi was murdered yesterday. I personally do not know a lot about the politics in Libya and did not know who Gadhafi was prior to his death. (it's interesting how much more famous people become after they are dead) For a little background, Gadhafi was the Libyan automatic ruler for 42 years. He was the fourth longest rulings non royal leader according to Wiki.. He believed in political ideology and was a huge influence on the economic costs of oil in Libya. He was part of terrorism toward the USA and killed people without remorse.
Now, yes I do think that he was a terrible man who did many terrible things. I do not think that he should have been in power for as long as he was and I don't think that any type of government can work under one person for over 40 years. It just doesn't work.
I am in shock though of how graphic the footage was of him being murdered. On almost all broadcast stations have footage of Gadhafi being murdered and carried through the streets with rebels all around him. I do not think that this footage needed to be shared to the public. There are a lot of youtube hits on this footage as well, with a lot more dislikes than likes. So, I wonder how so many people wanted him dead and wanted to see him suffer the way he suffered many other, but watching the actual footage of him getting murdered was to much and was not liked by many? What is appropriate to show and where does that line draw with broadcast media?

And the Leafs take the win!
Tonight the Winnipeg Jets (1-4) came to the Air Canada Centre to face the Toronto Maple Leafs (4-1). With Winnipeg scoring the first goal set the tone for the game to begin with. The Leafs replied though with a goal tying it at one all at the end of the first period.
As the second period finished up the Jets were ahead three to one. At this point I was getting pretty discouraged. As much as I hate the Leafs, I still have to cheer for them. Trust me when I say this; it is a curse in my family. As far back as I can remember, my great grandpa to my cousins to my dad to me. You aren't part of the Gillingham family unless you are a Leafs fan. So when they were losing today it was hard to watch. They seem to always just set us fans up for discouragement. I understand the whole never give up Justin Bieber pep talk, but I did not think any sort of comeback was in the making. But...
After the third and final period, here we go... The Leafs have the game tied up three all. The game goes into overtime. During the overtime there were no goals scored... That means a shoot out. I HATE shootouts. It is the absolutely worst way to win a game. It shows no indication of who played better and who deserved to win. Whatever though, what has to be done will be, and the team that came on top tonight ladies and gentlemen; the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Tonight was a good night. The Leafs win and the Jets get a point, which they do need. Hopefully the Leafs continue there streak tomorrow as the face Boston and here's hoping the Jets can pull of a win as well tomorrow! But for right now, goodnight!

Who are we? What are the important moments in our lives? How do we know when they happen? Will they change us forever? Can people even change? Do all the little things that we do in our everyday even matter? How do we know when the answers are right in front of us but we cannot see them?
These are questions that I have been asking myself recently.
How do we know who we are? - I thought that we were suppose to figure that question out while going through high school. When I graduated I thought that I had a pretty good idea of who I was and what I was going to do with my time and life after high school. Truth is, I have no idea. I am glad that I came to college, but I don't know if high school was supposed to shape who I am now, or if who I am is going to be shaped for the next couple years. How do we know when we are who we are?
What are the important moments in our lives? - I thought graduating was, but looking back now I don't know if I think that or not. It was a significant moment sure, but all the hype that it has, really? I know that I was always supposed to graduate, just like I was always supposed to brush my teeth in the morning, but I don't get a big celebration for that.. I don't know. I think now that getting a degree is a way bigger deal than getting a diploma. So at the time, the moments that seem to be shaping our lives seem to be a big deal, but are they really?
How do we know when they will happen? - I don't think that we ever do until we look back and can say, that's when it all changed. Everything. I want to have that moment.
Will they change us forever? - Depends on the next question I think.
Can people even change? I used to never think that you could. I believed that you are who you have always been. I think that you can lose yourself and maybe lose your way and do things that aren't you, but at the end of the day; you are who you've always been. I don't think that will ever change. Maybe sometimes you are hiding who you really are as well... I don't know. Tough question.
Do all the little things that we do in our everyday even matter? - Does getting up and going to 4 hours of sporting events everyday really matter when I am 45 years old? Will I look back and think that I wasted a lot of time doing that? I hope I don't.. It may have not helped my academics, but I can say that I know it makes me happy doing my sports, so is it a waste of time? Maybe not. But what about all the other things..
How do we know when the answers are right in front of us but we cannot see them? - I don't know how to answer this question. I wish that I could though, it would make my life a lot easier!
All of these questions that I have been thinking lately are questions that I think not only me, but others struggle with as well. And as much as others say that everything happens for a reason and we are who we are today because of everything we have been through, it is hard to believe that sometimes and remember that in the moments. I would love some answers though for these questions.. That would be fantastic ! Thanks.

JETS, JETS, JETS!!!!
Everybody loves Canada's old new favorite hockey team, The Winnipeg Jets. Welcome home boys! Now, I know that the Winnipeg Jets have maybe not done as well as what was expected from all the fans and people who have been working very hard to bring back the Jets and wanted them to excel this season. To me, the fact that they now have lost every one of there regular season games is not a huge shock. When the team came back to Winnipeg they did not have a winning record or the players needed to make a great Stanley Cup winning team. Also if you think about how incredibly overwhelming it would be for the athletes who are used to playing in an arena where they didn't even get a half a sold out crowd for a playoff game to a sold out crowd with millions watching for a exhibition game, it would be very intimidating.
So why all the hype? I love it, I am a fan of the Jets coming back to Winnipeg. I think it is great for the town and we should be proud of our teams. I think also that I love cheering for the Jets because of what they stand for. They are a team that is doing the best they can with what they've got, and it might not be a winning team, yet... but at least they aren't like the Toronto Maple Leafs who should have made the playoffs for the past five years but don't. If you think about it, it is pretty ridiculous that the Leafs play in front of sold out crowds every night and have all the money that a team could want and fails every year to produce a winning team. You might not know by the sounds of it, but I am a Leafs fan (a curse in my family) but my goodness is it frustrating to watch them loose when they shouldn't be, where as the Jets; maybe are not winning as many games as they should be, but you can tell they play with heart, they appreciate the people that are coming to watch and to me; they deserve to win a lot more than some of the other teams in the NHL right now.

For the past couple days there has been a big technologic issue with the Blackberrys. You probably have heard about it, everyone has. It consumes my Facebook and Twitter pages as well as most of the news online.
I think that this is absolutely ridiculous! Yes, I do understand that you pay a lot of money now a days for phone that has data and a 'msn' like messaging system; but really? I do not think that it is something that needs to be made into such a big deal, by blackberry users or any other people. I know that it isn't just the blackberry customers that are upset by this as well. As I am saying that it shouldn't be a big deal I am the one who is consuming my time talking about it but what can you do!
The thing that bothers me the most about this whole ordeal is how it just goes to show how crazy people are about getting there information right at there fingertips and how much they rely on something like a messaging service to get ahold of someone. Really? You can't send a normal text message to a certain someone? Or even better, you can't just call them? You can't go to your library to have an internet connection? Come on people! I don't think that this is such a big deal, it just gives the people something to talk about and it is negative media which the people love as well. I think that we should take pride that a Canadian company did such great things with our technology and realize some good things about blackberry instead of all of this insanity about one app not working.

I have a younger sister named Alexis. She is in grade 12 this year and over the weekend she was telling me about a kid in her class that said something that really bothered her, as well as myself.
In my sisters ELA Lit. class they read a book called Night. This book is based on a true story of a man's struggle through the Holocaust. It looked like a really interesting read and something that you could learn from. A girl in Alexis's class said that this was a really stupid book, and that she hated it. She then went on to say that history is really stupid and it doesn't matter what happened then because it had nothing to do with her. WOW. When I heard this I was so infuriated. How can someone be so insensitive, stupid, thoughtless to say something like that. Words cannot even describe.
Alexis did the a very similar thing that I did when she heard about that, she wrote about it, like I am going to do now. I do not for the life of me understand how anyone could say something so shallow. I love history. I think it is something that we need to learn and understand. If men did not die for my country so I could be free I would not be here right now. So for someone to say that history has nothing to do with them is such an understatement. History is what you are. It is amazing how selfless the people were for us now. People that they had no idea were even going to exist, but they still went and died for us. For you to say history doesn't matter shows how selfish you are.
I could rant for a very long time about this topic. It is something that young people NEED to learn about. It is something that needs to be respected and remembered.
"if we don't learn our history, we're doomed to repeat it".

I am from a really small town. When I say really I am not joking. We have about 1 000 people living in and around Rivers. My high school ( 7 - 12 ) had 156 bodies in it, so that includes staff! My graduating class had 27. I loved living in Rivers my whole life, but since coming here to Prov I have really began to understand what my parents meant when they said that there is a life outside of Rivers and you can always come home, but you need to leave for a while. Now, I understand that Prov isn't the biggest schools to go to of them all, but it is still a totally different experience than what I am used too!
In my school there wasn't a lot of diversity and so it was really hard to be different or like different things than what was 'cool'. One of my favorite things so far about getting away from Rivers and coming to Prov is that there are so many different groups and people that you can be friends with and different things that you can get involved in which I think is really cool and good for you.
So far everyone here is really nice and I have already made some great friends that I would never have got to meet if I stayed around my hometown, like my parents said; you can always come home: I will always have the people who were there for me through everything but like they also said; you need to leave: which so far I am happy I have for all the great opportunities I have had so far, and it's only October:)

This weekend I went and saw a movie; Moneyball. It is a film about the GM of the Oakland Athletics and how they did not have a lot of money or resources to build a team after a tough year of losing some of there key players.
If you did not know; this is a sports movie about baseball. A sport in which I am not very familiar with at all and do not follow. I really do not have very much interest in the sport and would way rather go and watch golf or curling.
My blog today is not a movie review though, I went into that theatre thinking that I would sit and watch a movie, a movie that I had no expectations or thoughts about at all. Since being at Providence I don't really get to watch a lot of movie trailers since I do not watch a lot of TV, which I'm actually not minding! In any case, I went into the movie theatre with no expectations and I came out amazed! I loved this movie. It is funny how when we don't have any expectations we are usually not disappointed which isn't something that you should do all the time; but in this case it wasn't a bad thing.
I thought it was so amazing how something that you have no idea what it is about or have no idea of the background to can be so amazing and moving. I don't want to ruin the film for you, so I will stop here. But I recommend this movie for anyone; whether you love the game of baseball, or sports, or whatever.
It was really nice to go into something and be so surprised with something!
The highlight of my weekend for sure.

We were given an assignment this week to participate and observe in an event of our choice then were supposed to write about it in our blog posts this week. I chose to write mine about my soccer game last night at 5.30. (Reason for being so late)
Usually I do not sit on the bench while playing soccer, but I was injured this week so I got to play a little and sit on the bench as well. When I play soccer usually I am focused on what I am supposed to be doing and do not worry a whole lot on what the fans, officials, and coach’s are saying.
The person who I was most surprised with was while observing the game was my coach! I usually just try to tune other people out, besides my teammates while playing so it was really interesting to sit back and listen to Dante talk (yell) about what we are supposed to be doing and where we are supposed to be on the field. It was interesting to watch his facial expressions as well. When he got really upset he would start talking in Spanish as well, which was something that I never have noticed before!
Another thing I noticed when watching the game was how some of the players on the team really worked well together and how some did not gel quite as well. Some of the girls were really good at communicating with each other, which ended up in some really good goals; which did lead to a win! It wasn’t as if the other girls did not play bad, just they didn’t seem to have the same chemistry as the other girls.
Overall I thought that it was a really interesting assignment and it was really cool to sit back and notice things that I didn’t realize were happening before. I think that it was also benefit my game play now that I have done that as well, to see how the girls play and how our coach talks to us; it will only help my game out in the long run! So thanks Dr. Greco!
Cheers!

Life Expectancy in Canada RISES
This afternoon CBC released an article saying how the average life expectancy of Canadians has increased to 80.9. I found this article pretty interesting and shocking to read just because of how people now a days try to pound it down our throat and tell us that we are not eating healthy enough and that global warning is affecting our health, in a bad way.
I know in my high school we were constantly getting taught about nutrition and how to eat healthy so we could decrease our chances of obesity. So I wonder why the life expectancy has increased in Canada. It was also shocking to find out that the life expectancy of males has increased; a little pick up for all the Canadian males out there!
Overall Canadians are listed as 11th place for the best life expectancy in Canada, with the USA coming in at 36th. I think that this news should be made very public because I think that we are focused to much on living right and staying healthy we clearly we are doing something right!

Disney!
So I recently went to the 3D Lion King in theatres, which was pretty cool. As I was sitting there watching it though I found myself laughing quite a bit! I thought that was strange because I could not remember laughing when I had watched it as a kid. After the movie I was talking to my mom about movies that she watched with me and my sister as a kid and she said that a lot of movies created by Disney, Pixar and other shows geared towards kids had a lot of adult humour in them as well. Not humour that a child would think was funny, but that adults could find entertaining as well.
I think that was very smart for Disney to do that and I think that it also makes the movies more enjoyable to watch and remember; however old or young you are.
On another note, it was interesting to watch The Lion King again, after looking this up to make sure my facts were correct; Walt Disney was anti semitic and it was very obvious in some scenes the way he projects his feelings. The one particular scene that came to mind was when Scar is getting ready to kill Mufasa, the Hyena's are marching the way the Nazi's would have.
Overall though it felt really good to watch a movie that I fell in love with when I was a kid and laugh at the jokes that I found funny then, and the ones that I found funny now.

Blog 11
Today is not a very creative day for me, I haven't thought about anything real great to blog about so I am going to talk about my favourite book/play/musical/ ever! Les Miserables. I fell in love with the musical Les Miserables when I was very young. In my life; going to the London broadcast of Les Mis. was probably the greatest thing that I have ever witnessed! (The Shamu show in Seaworld was pretty amazing though). I was probably only 10 or 11 when I went and saw it but I remember it so clearly. I went with my sister, mom and dad. Seeing the talent that these actors had was absolutely amazing. I had chills the entire performance! It is crazy that another person can do that to you by just hearing there voice and the story that they are singing. What it feels like for them I can only imagine.
Les Miserables was originally a book by Victor Hugo. Hugo was apparently a miserable man who was not well liked by very many people. It is hard to believe that a man such as that could write such beautiful work such as he has.
I love Les Miserables for many different reasons, but I love it because of what I took out of it;
Find something that you believe, then fight for it. No matter how much the odds are stacked against you.
Victor Hugo does send a lot of political messages in this book as well, but at the age I fell in love with it, that message didn't really get to me. I understand it know; but when I was younger what I took out of the musical was a lot simpler.
' To love another person is to see the face of God' - Musical - Les Miserables
' Those who do not weep do not see ' - Book - Les Miserables

Just recently it has came to my attention that Canada, more specifically Winnipeg has a large base of people that are being transported and imported for human trafficking. For those of you who do not know what sex trafficking is, it is an illegal trade of human beings for the purposes of reproductive slavery, commercial sexual exploitation, forced labour, or a modern-day form of slavery. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_trafficking).
In 2009 CBC did a story on Winnipeg being a big centre for child sex trade. I think that this is a major issue and I don't believe that it has been been brought to the public eye enough. Every year around 400 children are involved with sex trade in Winnipeg alone (2009 statistic) which I think is totally unacceptable.
The reason given for why Winnipeg has so many child slaves is; there is not enough room to shelter homeless girls. That to me is a very pathetic excuse. Human trafficking is illegal and a terrible crime. Up until recently when I thought crimes I usually thought, murder, stealing, assault, etc. I think these crimes because they are what gets put on the news every night and is what the people are being aware of. I think that human trafficking is something that is a very serious issue and it needs to be brought up more so that people can be aware of it so we can start doing some actions to fix it.
Here is the link to the 2009 CBC article on sex trade in Winnipeg; http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2009/07/08/mb-human-trafficking-winnipeg.html

Go Bomber Go!
Bombers vs Roughriders
I am 100% a Winnipeg Blue Bombers fan! It really bugs me when Roughrider fans try and tell me that there team is better than them without a doubt. When I ask why they say well look at what happened when we played you guys and beat you... Okay. Yes you did beat us. But what team is first in the league? What team has won the Grey Cup ten times, compared to the three times the Saskatchewan Roughriders have won it. What team can count the right about of players to be put on the field? What time is 8 and 3? What team is first in the CFL? Oh yeah, I know! The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, not the team that can't count, and that is second last in the league. The only reason they aren't last right now is because they narrowly pulled off a win against Toronto, which was a very painful game to watch. At any cost; I do not understand how fans like Saskatchewan can be so arrogant by trying to tell Winnipeg fans that they have the better team. It just doesn't make any sense to me, nor should it for any common sensed person!

LAKE SUPERIOR
I just got back from Wisconsin! A state that I have never been before and I was very impressed by it. Wisconsin was absolutely beautiful! The destination did not only have surprisingly amazing scenery that I saw though. On our way to Wisconsin to play soccer we drove around a bit of Lake Superior which was is in Minnesota. I was amazed with how beautiful the water was. I had no idea of how big these lakes were!
Lake superior is the largest of the Great Lakes. Just to give you an idea; it is the largest freshwater lake in the world if you are going by surface area and the third largest lake in the world if we are going by volume. Lake Superior is known for (beside's its size) the geology that can be found on the shores. It was also home to the worlds richest silver mine in the 1800's.
Lake Superior borders Canada and the USA. When we go other places I always think to myself that the locations I am at are so unique and beautiful and how much I would love to live there. When I think of Lake Superior I thought of that for a second then realized that this Great Lake is also home to Canada. We often take for granted the beauty of this country we live in and this weekend was a really good reminder of that!

This weekend in Quebec over five-hundred dogs were found and rescued from a puppy mill outside of Ottawa. The court still has to decide what will happen to the numerous dogs and whether or not they should be put up for adoption or returned back to there owner.
I don't understand how people can do such terrible things to innocent creatures that don't have a fighting chance. It really upsets me to know that with all the awareness and media that has been focused on puppy mills and how inhumane it is that people still continue to do such things. You must have some serious issues if you can knowingly harm animals that do not have a fighting chance. I know that they are not humans, but for a lot of people (myself included) who have pets treat there animals with as much pampering and respect as they would a family member. They almost do it to the point of it being ridiculous sometimes; but at any cost at least they still recognize that these animals come into the world, are born with a heart and are wanted to be loved. For people to totally forget about that is terrible and use the animals for profit in a uncivilized way is unforgivable. I hope that the owners of the puppy mill farm in Quebec and every other puppy farm in the world are treated with punishment and hopefully realize what they are doing is so, so wrong!

Blog 6, Interview
Today in class you asked us to interview someone for around twenty minutes and then see if we could find out about them and some surprising facts that we didn't know before, so without further adieu; here's KAITLYN!
Before we got to deep, we learnt a little about each other and where they were from. Kaitlyn is from Regina. This is her first year at Providence college and the reason she chose to pursue a degree in communications and media is because she wants to express her ideas and thoughts in a public way.
Some of Kaitlyn's favorites include; her favorite color is purple, she claims she loves everything purple (as she was wearing a purple sweatshirt), she loves watching Futurama and Tim Burton movies. Her favorite writer is Hunter S Thompson, who I had no idea who that was. Turns out Hunter S Thompson was an American journalist and is credited for creating the Gonzo journalism style of writing. Gonzo journalism is where the writer involves itself in the story so much that it becomes the central figure of the writing. Anyways, Kaitlyn really wants to travel up north because she loves northern animals such as polar bears and her favorite northern animal, an empire penguin! She also considers herself a 'nerd' because she likes playing World of Warcraft.
A really interesting special fact that I found out about Kaitlyn is that she is metis! Which did surprise me! She says that when her family gets together for important family gatherings on her dad's side they do wear their sashes. They also will get together and make traditional metis food!
I did really enjoy this assignment and I liked getting to know Kaitlyn and I appreciated her sharing things about herself to me. Thank you!!

Blog 5,
What defines an athlete? I was asked this question last week, and I wasn't to sure how to respond. There are a lot of things that popped up in my mind right away... but as soon as I think the idea's that popped into my mind soon something came up that contradicted it! So the only idea that I could think of lately that makes sense and something hasn't came up that makes it a faulty definition. To me, an athlete is someone who is mentally and physically fit. To me, you definitely need to be in a good physical condition to play a sport of any kind (Poker on TSN does not count as a sport). That one is kind of obvious I think. The other type of fitness I think you need to have in order to be an athlete is mentally fit. Being mentally fit for me means that you need to be in control of your emotions all the time and to have a strong attitude towards the sport that you are playing. It is easy to get physically fit I think... but being mentally fit is hard. I have been playing sports for over ten years and I am still trying to get the mentally fit part down. It is so easy to take things to personal when a coach yells at you or puts you down in a way that is strictly in the heat of the game and not a personal attack on the person. Being mentally fit also means that you need to realize how to play competitive, it makes you know that you need to set goals for yourself and achieving them, but then setting higher ones, and also working hard is a lot mental to me. Working hard means definitely is mental. You need to know that when you push yourself as much as you think you can push just that extra bit farther to finish the race.
So to me that is what the definition of being an athlete is! Goodnight:)

Remember; to recall to the mind with effort; think of again.
to keep (someone) in mind as worthy of consideration and recognition.
That is what I did yesterday, as well as many many others across the country and world did. Yesterday marked the tenth anniversary of 9/11. As I was watching the memorial yesterday morning on TV I saw all kinds of different faces and people. All were grieving at ground zero, the place where this tragic, terrible event happened. I cannot even begin to imagine how loved ones felt on that day. To look at there faces and see the sadness in there eyes because someone they knew and loved was taken from them to soon; that is a face I hope I never have to encounter for myself or anyone else that I know or love. These people that I saw yesterday showed amazing courage and strength, and I am sure that whom ever they are missing, those people or person would be so proud of them in that moment.
It is never fair to see a an innocent life, or in this case innocents lives taken from them without there will. I don't know how someone can justify doing what they did that day.
Nearly 3 000 lives were taken that day. Yesterday we thought of them and what their lives would have been like today. Who would they be? A husband, wife, dad, mom, uncle, aunt, son, daughter, cousin, grandfather, grandmother, brother, sister, or friend? When I think of that, I think of there loved ones and how they feel on a day like yesterday. I also think about my family though, and even though we fight sometimes and are sometimes maybe to harsh on each other I think about what my life would be without them, and I can't even imagine. So in memory of that horrible day I hope that everyone else out there also took a moment to remember the courageous people who died on that day fighting to help the victims of the attack. Think about there families that have to live everyday without them, and think about your own family and be so grateful for the life that you have. Live your life everyday to the fullest extent that you can. Love the people in your life everyday. Pray for the people who need help.

Blog 3 , Men vs Women
Today the woman's college soccer team that I am on had a meeting today to talk about some of the elements and different idea's we and other people (like our peers) around us have about being an athlete. This conversation evolved into a different conversation about the difference between men and woman in sport, then from the that just the difference between men and woman in general. It really got me thinking about how much our world has changed in the fact that woman are so much more powerful and respected now a days compared to ____ when woman were treated terribly and weren't thought of anything to a lot of people.
I don't know a whole lot on how much we as woman have been treated differently over the past years so I thought that I would do some research to find out more about woman's rights and history. From what I do know though, I think that we have come a long way ALTHOUGH I really do think that some of the idea's of woman are still not represented correctly and it is still very unfair in a lot of ways. For an example; most men's sports team's have a later starting event than the woman's. Which if you just saw that on the schedule you wouldn't think would be a big deal... when you look closer into it though I think that it should rotate, men games start first, then woman's. The reason I think that that is unfair is because the men's games are later on in the evening and everyone will come and watch them compared to a woman's game which is a five instead of seven and at five everyone is still eating there supper. Men 99% of the time have a larger fan base than the woman and I think that it isn't because of the gender, but because of a time slot for them. How do woman expect to be recognized as good strong competitors when they don't have the support in the first place to prove themselves? I guess though if the woman's soccer team went and supported there argument to a board of people then it would be a big deal because really the men were just being polite and just doing what is right by them, "ladies first". There are both extreme's I suppose!
Here is just some food for thought to process though; these are just some facts I found on a website called http://she-power.com/2008/02/25-fast-facts-about-women/
- In 76 countries, less than half of the eligilbe girls are enrolled in secondary school, but the highest standard IQ's ever recorded were from woman.
- Woman only own 1% of the world land
- Only 5% of featured Hollywood film are directed by women
- According to The World Health Org., 40% of woman 17 years of age or under in South Africa are reported to being a victim of rape or attempted rape.
So while as a society in whole we have improved our way's of woman's rights there is still very much room for improvement!

First day of classes and I survived! I had two different classes today; Speaking in Public and Western Civilization, and after both of them I realized that I think that I can survive the next eight months and that I might actually enjoy the next eight months. The only class that I am really not looking forward to is Science. Not much of a science person... Or math. Which is exactly why I chose to go into Communications and Media. I have wanted to be A LOT of different careers! You name it and there is a good chance that I have wanted to pursue it as a career. I have a pretty short attention span though, and find a lot of different things interesting, so once I got my mind set on my latest and best career choice I would be sitting there watching shark week and think that it would be so much fun and so amazing to be able to swim with the sharks and find out all about them... and by that point I had forgotten all about the last career path I was wanting to do and now wanting to be a marine biologist. Later on I found out though that as much as I did not like math, I really did not like science much more.
I have always really liked English and history though, and like I said before how I dislike math and science very much, and how I am not able to concentrate on the same subject for a very long time before the next best and greatest thing comes along... So my dad actually mentioned to me one day about possibly going into broadcast television. That sounded pretty cool. I liked the news, my favourite story to follow this year was the Casey Anthony case. Terrible story. She must have had Michael Jackson's and OJ Simpson's lawyer or something. Anyways, I really did like the idea of becoming a journalist of some sort because of everything that I got told about it. Not a lot of math skills required, you report one story and then are onto the next so you really don't need to focus on the same idea for that long of time, and I get to talk all day, which I have no problem doing so!
It has now been about eight months that I have stuck to this career choice and so far I am enjoying all the steps I am taking to becoming a journalist or some sort. Here's hoping it continues!
Cheers,
Laura

First blog, yay! I hope I am doing this correct! Today was supposed to be my first day of classes, but unfortunately I had to miss my first two courses for a funeral. I am thinking that I am just supposed to be writing about anything I feel like? Lets hope so, because that is what I am going to do tonight!
So my mood, not the greatest. Not surprising considering I just came from a relatives funeral. As much as I am very sad that he passed away it was almost just as sad to see everyone there grieving for him. Funeral's are very sad but as much as they are sad, I feel like I laugh as much as I do cry. It is really comforting I found today to instead grieve about the death but to talk to all my family about the good times that we all had with him. I think that everyone is so sad and everyone is dealing with so many different emotions that after the funeral is done that it is nice just to sit and relax; at that point a lot of the stress is lifted that you had about arrangements for the funeral, you are done crying; well maybe not done, but for a the past three or four day's that has been all you have done and that really does exhaust you. Just a lot of the emotions that you have been dealing with can be kind of set aside and you can relax with people that you feel comfortable around and just enjoy all of the stories that are shared about someone who once was close to you and made an impact in your life in one way or another.
So, with all that said, maybe a little to heavy for a first blog? But for now I am done for the night. Hopefully they get a bit better as the year continues!
Goodnight!
