Tonight I am going to be talking about how different people find the motivation to do things in sport. Throughout the past two months I have played both soccer and volleyball here at Providence. Soccer started first and our coach was pretty hard on us. To motivate us he would yell at us and be very upfront to us which I think worked the best for me. He would tell us if we weren't playing good, and he would tell us if we were. A lot of the girls that I was playing with did not like his approach to coaching. They thought that he was to hard on them and that it was no way to talk to people. This caused some tension between our team dynamics which was hard, but we had a talk and it for the most part got resolved.
Since the soccer season is now over, I have been playing on the volleyball team. My volleyball coach is very different from my soccer coach. My volleyball coach is not as verbal as my soccer coach was. He is more particular with the words that he uses when he wants us to do better. I think for the dynamics of the volleyball team and how they think, this is a better approach. I wouldn't mind it if he was more verbal and told us when we needed to pick it up; but that's ok.
I am interested in seeing what one is more affective overall and which one is preferred. They both work for different people. I think that you can tell a lot from a person to how they can be coached. Most girls who like the 'hard-ass' coaching for lack of a better word and tougher as a person and I think who can handle the pressures a lot more compared to someone who is more sensitive to what coaches tell them. I have always been told and always believe that if a coach is not giving you feedback and not yelling at you or telling you what to do you should be more worried than if he is not saying anything to you at all. If he/she has stopped talking or worrying about you, then he has given up on you and that is a much scarier thing than a coach yelling at you and pushing you because he knows that you can do better!
And with that, I am concluding my blog posts!! Not that I won't write again, but it will not be as frequent as it has been for the past three months! Talk to you all later.
